About Amy Strycula

You don't take a photograph, you make it.
           - Ansel Adams

As we grow older, we grow wiser. I'm excited to be embarking on a revival of my involvement in photography. The older, wiser me now understands what Ansel Adams meant when he said, "You don't take a photograph, you make it."

The older, wiser me is approaching my photography with this newfound philosophy and is experiencing the joy of creating a photograph, rather than just taking it.

When you grow older, the things that you've experienced and learned in life seem to come together and begin to make sense. I've always been a creative soul... a serious musician, an artist, a visual thinker. As 'life' rolled on, at times I may have lost touch with those creative aspects of myself. My professional career of many years lead me into the world of technology, of which many now consider me a guru.

Creativity, apparently, cannot remain subdued forever. In recent years, that familiar desire to capture moments and create memories has returned. As I pursue my refreshed inner creativity, the older, wiser me is able to combine creativity and vision with technology to create in a new and better way.

My initial involvement in photography began more than thirty years ago, when I was heavily involved in Concert and Celebrity Photography. Over a fifteen year period, I photographed hundreds of entertainers and celebrities from all genres. My work has been featured in magazines such as Country Weekly, Country Magazine, The National Enquirer, and other well known publications. In addition, I am well versed in covering entertainment and media events, and enjoy interviewing, reviewing and authoring content for magazines, newspapers, and other media outlets. I am always interested in opportunities to cover performance and entertainment events in any capacity.

Older and wiser also means more able to travel to varied and exotic locations. I am a frequent worldwide traveler and have many opportunities to capture images from across the United States and around the world. I enjoy Travel Photography and my portfolio will continue to grow in this area.

When I'm not traveling, I enjoy exploring the uniqueness and beauty of my home, Pittsburgh, PA and western Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh is an area rich in cultural neighborhoods, interesting architecture, and history; my sources for inspiration here are endless.

I'm also fascinated with HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging), which allows a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows. Using this techcnique, I attempt to blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion.
